Bippera-Kymel 2O1O: Sounds of FNQ and the Torres Strait

Indigenous performance and the incredible diversity of Tropical North Queensland's music scene will be celebrated at a special Cairns Indigenous Art Fair concert on Friday 2O August, also the opening event of Cairns Festival 2O1O. Bippera-Kymel Sounds of FNQ and the Torres Strait features hot new talent Dan Sultan, Getano Bann and Will Kepa, with acclaimed didgeridoo player David Hudson as MC.

Dan Sultan

Headline act Dan Sultan's star continues to rise as the music industry takes a keen interest in the progress of this man and his band. Dan's career has exploded, with his second album, Get Out While You Can, one of the highest-selling independent releases in Australia today and a triple j featured album of the week.

Multi-talented Dan has received rave reviews for his performances in the recent Kev Carmody and Paul Kelly tributes, and his turn in hit movie Bran Nue Dae. From haunting acoustic ballads to big band soul rock, Dan and his seven-piece band are guaranteed to make you move.

Will Kepa

Will Kepa is a Torres Strait Islander singer-songwriter, drummer, bassist, guitarist, audio engineer and producer, with connections to Yam Island. A gifted and consummate all-rounder, Will is equally comfortable behind the drum kit as he is behind the mixing console, singing or playing guitar.

He has worked with many of Australia's leading Indigenous musicians including Seaman Dan, David Hudson, Wilma Reading, Zennith, Emma-Louise Lobb and The Briscoe Sisters. His musical tastes are as varied as his abilities and encompass rock, roots, jazz, folk and traditional island sounds.

Getano Bann

Getano Bann is an acclaimed singer, songwriter, storyteller and music therapist. Raised on the banks of the Pioneer River in his home town of Mackay, music, dance, storytelling and humour were an influential and integral part of his childhood growing up in an extended Torres Strait Islander family. His music has been described as provocative, passionate and poignant, and his songs are a rich blend and texture of musical styles, intertwining family stories, cultural perspectives, life lessons and self reflective moments.

David Hudson

MC and performer David Hudson's natural talent and energy will keep the audience entertained at Bippera-Kymel. Early in his life, Cairns-born David felt compelled to learn the lore of his people and he spent many years playing the didgeridoo and learning dances from his Elders. David was the first choreographer and co-producer of Tjapukai Dance Theatre, which has grown to become a major tourist attraction.
