EXHIBITION

The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair Exhibition, a feature of the inaugural CIAF in 2009, this year moves to Cairns Regional Gallery. With CIAF Artistic Director Michael Snelling and Cairns Regional Gallery's Brian Robinson guiding the selection of works, this show promises to deliver an in-depth look at Indigenous art from across Queensland.

The CIAF Exhibition seeks to show artists mostly not seen elsewhere in the art fair and includes artists from a diversity of geographies and styles, from the Torres Strait to South East Queensland, from traditional dhoeris to contemporary new media. This brings a terrific vibrancy to the exhibition, allowing for direct political statement to sit alongside ages-old traditional practice; for customary weaving practices to share the space with digital imagery; and for this to all be seen as of 'now', as relevant, contemporary and thriving.

Last year's CIAF Exhibition revealed a broad canvas of what Indigenous practice can be understood to be. This year the exhibition will add new artists and new work from some familiar names. At the same time, newer generations of artists are establishing themselves, some self-taught, others from the Indigenous Art Centres across the north, the islands of the Torres Strait and as graduates from art schools around the nation. There are many different kinds of art involved in these old-yet-new perspectives.
